Aprilia introduces a new version of the super technological Caponord 1200 that breaks down the confines of paved roads to become even more transversal and suitable for any trip

Introducing the new Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally: more eclectic, more protective, more comfortable, super equipped. The high performance of the twin-cylinder is a perfect match for the exceptional chassis features typical of all Aprilia bikes as well as the technological contents such as ADD, the semi-active suspension system that automatically adapts calibration based on road surface and riding style.

After introducing the Caponord 1200, the perfect crossover for any type of road use, at the top of its category for technical content and chassis quality, Aprilia introduces a version capable of pushing beyond the confines of paved roads, where travel turns into adventure. Introducing the Caponord 1200 Rally, a splendid representative of the global bike, suited for fun and long range touring and not only on asphalt, as well as daily mobility, of course.

The concept of a single bike for any type of road broadens. The new spoked wheels - with 19 inches on the front - that the Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally mounts, shod with versatile tyres suited for any terrain, make any destination reachable, no matter what type of road surface you need to tackle. Making the Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally even more versatile is the sophisticated ADD semi-active suspension system (covered by four patents), capable of detecting the rider's riding style, the amount of cargo loaded and the road surface conditions to adapt the set up automatically and in real time. This is an exclusive patented by Aprilia and based on its extensive experience in the field of electronic solutions that the brand from Noale has gained by winning top level competitions like the Superbike championship where Aprilia has been crowned world champion five times in four years. The electronic control package for safety and riding comfort that comes standard on the Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally is completed by traction control adjustable to 3 levels (that can also be disabled), Ride-by-wire multimap, cruise control and ABS (which can also be disabled).

The touring and adventure vocation of the new Aprilia flagship is emphasised by the spacious and rugged hard panniers that allow even a passenger to travel without making any sacrifices. The Rally is the "premium" version of the Caponord 1200 and it relies on standard equipment that is unparalleled in its segment, including the handguards, the oversized, height adjustable windshield, the ample side guards and the supplementary LED lights which complement the already powerful triple front headlight typical of the Aprilia style.

The 1197 twin-cylinder engine is at the top of its class for quality and full power output even at low rpms, the amount of torque output throughout the entire range of use and for its easily modified performance thanks to the triple mapping that the sophisticated electronic management allows, including (as with all new generation Aprilias) the electronic Ride-by-wire accelerator. More comfort, more protection and more riding pleasure are characteristics that imply uninterrupted travel, made possible by the excellent capacity of the 24 litre fuel tank, nestled in a sleek and easy to manage body, partially due to the overall weight of the Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally, one of the lightest in its category.

The graphics are completely new, with brand new paintwork on the engine and frame that match three colour schemes for the superstructure: Giallo (Yellow) Dune, Verde (Green) Army and Grigio (Grey) Safari, all matte, with a wide variety of available accessories specifically designed and developed for this model - including the innovative AMP multimedia platform - that let you make your new Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally even more personal and complete.

The standard equipment on the Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally truly includes everything:
" electronic Ride-by-wire accelerator with triple maps (Sport, Touring and Rain) that can be selected by the rider
" Two-channel ABS (can be disabled)
" ATC (Aprilia Traction Control) adjustable to three levels (can be switched off)
" ADD (Aprilia Dynamic Damping), a system capable of "reading" the road, recognising the rider's riding style and automatically adjusting the suspension set up
" ACC (Aprilia Cruise Control)
" pair of panniers
" adjustable oversized windshield
" hand guards
" side guards
" pair of supplementary LED lights
" spoked wheels with 120/70R19 (frt) and 170/60R17 (rear) tyres

Review

In the European market, upright street-legal motorcycles with an off-road look are commonly called street-enduros. Although we at Cycle World typically dont use that term, it does make some sense. It categorizes this increasingly popular type of motorcycle as a streetbike first, then as a machine that can also be ridden in the dirt, albeit sometimes only minimally. Its also a term that applies perfectly to the current Aprilia Caponord, which made its debut in 2013 with upright ergonomics and an ADV look but street-friendly 17-in. cast wheels front and rear.

This June, though, the new 2015 Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally arrives in the US. Its the ADV Caponord. As such, its fitted with tubeless wire-spoked wheels (17-in. rear, 19-in. front, in widths suitable for dirt-oriented tires) and abundant standard adventure hardware that includes tubular crash guards, large 33-liter side cases, an engine skid plate, auxiliary LED lights, and a taller manually adjustable windscreen. Aprilia has also fine-tuned the traction control and ABS to work more effectively in the dirt.

I recently rode this new Caponord 1200 Rally at the bikes global press introduction, on Sardinia. There, I spent the better part of day riding this $15,695 ADV machine, mostly on the islands grippy tarmac but also on a couple of easy dirt sections.

Quick take: Im impressed. The Caponord 1200 Rally is fun, totally at home on Sardinias twisting tarmac. The chassis is outstanding (as we already know from Editor-in-Chief Mark Hoyers test of the Aprilia Caponord 1200 ABS Travel Pack), and the 1,197cc four-cam 90-degree V-twin puts out plenty of power, aided by a new Helmholtz resonator in the exhaust that is said to improve the low-end and midrange power of this liquid-cooled twin-spark powerplant without altering the peak values.

Could I feel this change while riding the bike? Not really. The 1200 Rally just felt plenty strong, able to pull hard without protest from low rpm and occasionally even loft its front wheel when I was hard on the throttle and upshifting with the precise six-speed gearbox.

Because of the larger new front wheel, Aprilia engineers had to alter the front geometry to keep the handling dynamics as close as possible to those of the standard Caponord. Theyve succeeded; the 1200 Rally feels just as sporty as a standard Caponord, bending into corners with a natural ease and good clearance while staying composed under power on the way out. Grip from the stock Metzeler Tourance Next tiressize 120/70-19 front, 170/60-17 rearis excellent. In actual numbers, Aprilia, via changing the offset of the triple clamps, has increased steering rake to 27.4 degrees (from 26.1) and shortened trail to 4.6 inches (from 4.9). And all it takes is a quick look at the bottom of the inverted fork to see how Aprilia has moved the axle forward a small bit and reduced trail.

Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally cornering action

As on the standard Caponord, the new 1200 Rally has a three-mode ride-by-wire throttle, with Touring, Sport, and Rain settings, the last cutting engine output to 100 horsepower (from a claimed 125) for added safety in wet conditions. I spent most of the day in Touring because Sport felt too sensitive, too abrupt, for the smooth type of touring riding I enjoy.

Similarly, the 1200 Rallys traction control has three selectable levels, each with an increasing degree of intervention. Map 1, though, has been changed to help the Rally in the dirt. In that mode, a new double threshold of intervention allows a certain amount of wheelspin for added control on terra firma. As with the ABS (a two-channel system from Continental also tuned to work more effectively in the dirt), the traction control can be completely shut off by the rider.

Besides the Caponord Rallys excellent chassis and stout motor, what impressed me most about the bike is its electronically controlled suspension, a set and forget system that features automatic damping control and four electronically adjustable rear preload settings. As recommended by Aprilia, I rode with the preload in the full automatic mode, letting the bike handle all the adjustments, and it did so with aplomb. As on the standard Caponord, a pressure sensor on the top of the left fork tube and a potentiometer on the swingarm calculate the speed of the suspension stroke front and rear, then call for constant stream of adjustments that provide proper damping for all occasions. These adjustments are completely transparent, evident only in the remarkable composure of the bike as it glides through dips at intersections or is flicked through your favorite left/right chicane on the way to work. Interestingly, Aprilias engineers say the ADD (Aprilia Dynamic Damping) didnt need to be tweaked in any way for the Caponord 1200 Rally, which they cite as further proof of the systems effectiveness.

2015 Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally front section close-up

On the winding coastal and mountain roads, the 1200 Rally felt great, aided by its wide handlebar and an upright and roomy riding position that placed my thighs right below the slanted ridge in the Caponords generous 6.3-gallon fuel tank. The well-padded seat was comfortable and grippy, and the big new windscreen, in its raised position, directed air up and over my Arai XD4 helmet, never lifting the bill even at highway speeds.

As stated, the chassis movements of this latest Aprilia were well controlled, and there was very little dive when braking hard for corners. And while the 1200 Rally is not exactly a featherweight, its claimed dry weight of 525 lb. is significantly lighter than that of most traditional touring machines. For the record, the new Rally is 54 lb. heavier than a standard Caponord and 22 lb. up on the Travel Pack model.

And weight, as well know, is your enemy in the dirt. On the short (maybe five miles) stretch of hard-packed dirt that we tried on Sardinia, the Rally felt fine. I could stand on the footpegs as needed, but as a taller rider Id remove the thick rubber insulators from the pegs so I could reach the handlebar more easily while standing.

riding the 2015 Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally on dirt roads

So, how will the Caponord 1200 Rally compare with, say, the BMW R1200GS Adventure or KTM 1190 Adventure R on the dirt? Tough to say. Although I suspect the considerably more expensive BMW and KTM will have an edge off road, it should be noted that the Aprilia is 57 lb. lighter than the R1200GS and weighs about the same as the 1190 Adventure R.

A comparison test is in order, for sure. For one thing, wed like to see if the Caponord 1200 Rallys semi-active Sachs suspension works well enough with the dirt-appropriate wheels and other hardware to propel this latest Aprilia out of the street-enduro ranks and into the true ADV category.

Also, wed be remiss not to mention that the 2015 Caponord 1200 Rally has a few other arrows in its quiver. The standard hard bags are roomy and durable, even though their plastic construction is disguised by protective aluminum panels. And in addition to available off-road footpegs, theres an accessory top case that will hold two full-face helmets. Last, the big Italian is offered with a trick interface that links your iPhone or Android device with the bike and transforms your phone into a virtual dashboard for the bike. Besides map data, your phone can display engine power output, bike lean angle, all kinds of fun data, even how far you are from the famous North Cape in Norway that gave the bike its name.

Its just fun little way for Aprilia to remind us that the new Caponord 1200 Rally is a long-distance adventure-tourer that can cover vast distances in good comfort. And with its sweet chassis, excellent power, and seamless electronics, the big Italian will shine in that duty. It will also take you down a dirt path, for example, to reach a lookout point for that stunningly beautiful glacial blue lake in the Canadian Rockies. But if youre planning a multi-day trek on the dirt of Death Valley or Baja California, well just have to wait and see how this new Caponord 1200 Rally performs with a set of DOT knobbies (Continental TKC80s or Kenda Big Blocks, for example) before we can answer that one. Well get back to you.

2013 Ford Mustang Red Tails Edition

2013 Ford Mustang Red Tails Edition

It's the Mustang Mach 1 that UK fans have been waiting for.

Depending on where you buy a Ford Mustang, you won't necessarily be getting the same bang for your buck. The Mustang Mach 1 is evidence of this; it made its European debut last year and while this may have pleased Mustang fans in that region, they have to make do with a detuned version of the Coyote V8 engine. But a Mustang tuner called Clive Sutton decided that the UK deserved a more powerful Mach 1 after all. That's why the company has revealed this, the 767 Edition Mustang Mach 1. In case you're wondering, yes, the '767' in the name equates to the amount of horsepower this special edition of the Mustang has on tap.

This supercharged 5.0-liter V8 Mustang comes with a stage 2 Whipple supercharger and has also received upgrades to its suspension and exhaust system. The package includes MagneRide dampers and what is said to be a track-focused chassis setup. The 767 Edition also enjoys a host of interior and exterior upgrades compared with the regular Mach 1. The aggressive look is thanks to 19-inch wheels and the Ford Performance Mach 1 kit. This is made up of a front wheel lip molding, an aero front splitter, and a rear racing spoiler. Large quad-exit tailpipes no doubt emit a wonderful roar from that V8.

Both a six-speed manual and a 10-speed automatic are available. Inside, the 767 Edition gets Recaro sports seats to hold you in place during hard driving, along with special mood lighting and a unique starter button. According to Piston Heads, this special Mustang carries an enormous price tag of £96,000, which works out to approximately $132,600 at current rates, nearly double the price of a Shelby GT500 in the US.

"Exclusivity, range-beating performance, and absolute attention to detail are all qualities our customers look for - we've delivered each in spades with the Mach 1 767 Edition," said founder and CEO Clive Sutton.

2016 Harley-Davidson Dyna Street Bob Review

2016 Harley-Davidson Dyna Street Bob on www.Totalmotorcycle.com

The time-honored art of getting rid of everything that doesn't matter…

The original bobber fanatics invented the style you see here, and they had one rule: if it weighs you down, get rid of it. That's the Street Bob® motorcycle in spades. Solo seat. Chopped rear fender. Mini-apes putting your fists in the wind. No B.S. All it takes is a twist of the wrist to send whatever the world is trying to weigh you down with to the vanishing point behind you.

These twin-shocked bobbers are the rawest, most stripped down of all our Big Twins. Inspired by the custom garages of the '70s, they've provided the ideal canvas for untold customizers. Most of the family have the latest 1690cc V-Twin powertrain to go with the 6-Speed Cruise Drive™ transmission they all share.

2016 Harley-Davidson Dyna Street Bob www.Totalmotorcycle.com Key Features

The Street Bob® motorcycle oozes cool with tough looks that go straight back to the roots of the bobber scene. The model leaves everything exposed and is as "naked" as the law allows. There's not a part on it that isn't absolutely necessary, yet it's also premium in every way.

NEW IN 2016
Paint color options including Hard Candy Custom™ colors

The motorcycles in the Dyna family trace their roots to the original Harley-Davidson factory customs. Notice the powerful front ends, chromed steel details and tricked-out wheels. There isn't an ounce of doubt that you're

Iconic Engine

There is something about the steady pulse of power from an air-cooled Twin Cam 103™ engine that works its way into a rider and won't let go. Once you've experienced it you understand. Nothing else in the world of motorized transportation could be as satisfying. There are perfectly rational explanations for this. The lightweight piston design and refined delivery of power. The strong driveline and bulletproof internal parts. The way engine and Six-Speed Cruise Drive transmission work flawlessly together to carry you down the highway at a relaxed, easy-riding rpm. But rational explanations never go far enough. What you feel when the power of this engine pulls you down the road toward the vanishing point is the legacy of the Flathead, Knucklehead, Panhead, Shovelhead, Evolution, Twin Cam 88 and Twin Cam 96 engines that came before. It's something no ordinary engine can deliver.

Technology

You don't see a lot of 21 century technology peeking through the clean old-school lines of the motorcycles in the Dyna family. That's the point. Once the teams of engineers and industrial designers have finished building the systems that load these motorcycles up with modern function, the job is only half finished. The next step is to find smart ways to integrate it into the design without taking away from the styling cues. Take the anti-lock brakes that are either standard or available as a factory-installed option across the line. It's one of the top ABS systems out there, and gives you the control you want in a modern motorcycle. But the real beauty is the way we streamlined the look of the hardware.

Handling

If there's anything the unruly bunch of riders that gravitate to a Dyna® motorcycle have in common, it's that they're not easily satisfied. So we built every bike in the family to bridge the gap between knockout looks and uncompromising open road function. The exceptional stiffness of the chassis makes for sure-footed handling. The brakes and suspension components are top end, and the custom-style wheels roll on premium rubber designed for both durability and grip performance. A Dyna motorcycle is rolling proof that you don't need a bike that looks like it belongs in a B-grade science fiction movie to burn through a wicked set of curves.

Comfort

Journey back far enough in the factory custom history of the Dyna family and you get to the machine that started the whole thing off: a Harley-Davidson touring bike. Seriously, and that's your first clue to the rider comfort that waits for you in the saddle of today's Dyna motorcycle. That early touring machine featured a new kind of isolation mounting system for the engine. Which led to a series of innovative frame designs. And that brings us to the current Dyna frame and its two-point engine isolation mounting system. It makes sure the power of 103 cubic inches of Twin Cam 103™ engine gets to the pavement. But the vibrations don't get to the rider. You'll find the same dogged approach to rider comfort throughout every inch of every bike in the family. Handlebars designed to fight the fatigue of a long day in the wind. Foot pegs and controls that hit your boots exactly where they ought to. The look is hard as nails. That doesn't mean the ride has to be.

Fuel Tank Medallions

When it comes to motorcycles, there's one name that people will never mistake for another: Harley-Davidson. The Street Bob® model features cast fuel tank medallions with classic styling that oozes the iconic Harley-Davidson attitude. Consider it your badge of honor bolted on the side of the fuel tank so everyone can see exactly how you roll.

Mini Ape-Hanger Handlebar

Grab hold of the stainless steel mini ape-hanger handlebar and put your fists way into the wind. The style is pure post-war bobbers, and we keep it clean and minimalist by routing the wires inside the steel. We've rubber-isolated the bars with separate risers and blacked out top triple clamps, so you can ride more comfortably, with less vibration, and can accessorize with less hassle.

Stop-Turn-Tail Lights

Old-school looks meet new-school engineering. Minimalist chrome retro-style bullet taillights combine functionality to work twice as hard—stop beams and running lights plus turn indicators in two low-profile rear lamps.

Hard Candy Custom™ Paint

Hard Candy Custom™ paint is a large metal flake finish that's more than just a paint job, it's a shining declaration of independence—bright, bold and unique. The Dyna® Street Bob® model is available in Hard Candy Cancun Blue Flake (or, through H-D1™ Factory Customization, in Hard Candy Gold Flake or Hard Candy Black Gold Flake). Recalling the iconic rebel styling of '70s custom bikes, Hard Candy Custom™ paint marks another milestone in The Motor Company's legacy of innovation. We start with several passes of 200 micron flake over a black base, then clear coat it, hand-lay the graphics, and apply the many layers of clear coat to allow the flake to shine through. It's a painstaking process that delivers a premium custom look straight from the factory, so you can start flying your colors with no waiting or extra effort.

Blacked Out Console

A big part of the Street Bob® model's raw look, this blacked-out, gas tank-mounted console delivers minimalist style and big functionality. The full-length console is textured-black and includes an integrated barrel-key ignition switch and LED indicator lights, electronic speedometer with gear/RPM indicator, tach, clock, trip-meter, and engine diagnostics.

Bobber Powertrain & Air Cover

As part of its back-to-basics street custom style, the Street Bob® model's powertrain was designed along classic, minimal lines. Along with the retro-style air cleaner cover, stamped with The Motor Company Bar and Shield, this gives the engine an authentic old-iron soul and genuine Bobber presence.

Blacked Out Rims & Large Front Wheel

Raw, gritty and no-nonsense—minimalist, yet premium in every detail—the Street Bob® motorcycle's overall blacked out styling includes black laced steel wheels and stainless steel spokes with an aggressive 19″ wheel up front to lead your way out of the mundane. Blacked out like the Harley-Davidson® Twin Cam engine, these wheels make a bold statement and provide a smooth, true ride.

Black Out Styling

The Street Bob® motorcycle takes the tradition of bare bones street custom forward with its classic, essential bobber style and massive amounts of black finish: gloss black front end triple clamps, textured black console, blacked out powertrain with textured covers. It's an aggressive, unpolished street attitude that pulls no punches and delivers only what you need, nothing you don't.

H-D1™ Factory Customization

Our employees go to work, building your motorcycle according to your design, and in about 4 weeks* your masterpiece will be ready for you at your dealer.

Twin Cam 103™ Engine

The knowledge of what makes an engine truly move a rider runs deep at The Motor Company, and it was put to good use when we created the Twin Cam 103™ engine. We sweated bullets perfecting every cubic inch, pushing design and technology forward. And we did it all without compromising one bit of Harley-Davidson's unique styling. Evolved, yet carrying on the legacy of the Flathead, Knucklehead, Panhead, Shovelhead, Evolution® and Twin Cam 88® and Twin Cam 96® engines that came before. The performance and durability are a direct result of the untold miles logged on the V-Twin since 1909 and the proud heritage that comes from a century's worth of commitment to life on two wheels.

Twin Cam 103™ Engine Innovation

Fire up the Twin Cam 103™ engine and feel the low-end torque unleashed. Thanks to the lightweight piston design, delivery of the added power is more refined than ever. Then put your foot on the shifter and feel how the engine and Six-Speed Cruise Drive® transmission were designed to work together. Six speeds. A strong driveline and strong internal parts. Low routine maintenance. And a low cruising rpm couldn't feel better.

Pure Blacked Out Styling

Feast your eyes on the Twin Cam 103™ engine and there's no mistaking its roots. From the classic edge of the cooling fins to the clean lines of cases and covers, this is authentic Harley-Davidson style through and through with an attention to detail you won't find from any other motorcycle company. The finish features a blacked-out powertrain, a gloss black battery cover and textured wrinkle-black rockers with highlighted fins. It's pure, minimal styling that makes an elemental statement about holding to what's right and staying true to what satisfies.

Six-Speed Cruise Drive® Transmission

You want a ride that rumbles—not begs for mercy—when you lean on it a little. The Six-Speed Cruise Drive® transmission provides smooth, quiet shifting and reduces engine speed on the highway, so you get a better match between engine turnover and road speed. It's a rare ride when a bike responds like this, and a low growl goes a long way when you're opening up the road ahead.

Anti-Lock Brakes (Optional)

This sophisticated, factory-installed ABS gives 'stopping power' a double meaning. You'll turn heads with clean, streamlined design. But more importantly, you get certainty in the saddle knowing your bike's going to behave when you need it.

H-D® Smart Security System (Optional)

The factory-installed next-generation security system features a hands-free fob that automatically arms and disarms the vehicle's electronic security functions as you approach and walk away from the bike. Stick the fob on your ignition key ring and let it do all the work. It's this attention to detail and security that make Harley-Davidson® motorcycles unique.

Adjustable Suspension

Easily adjust preload with a spanner wrench to suit your suspension to your riding style. The slammed low rear suspension gives you a more laid-back riding position and style. Low-profile, kicked back for profiling down the boulevard and hugging corners.

Michelin® Scorcher™ Tires

Michelin® Scorcher™ tires provide the superior performance, sensational grip, impressive durability and excellent handling expected on a race-bred bike. The exclusive deep-cut tread design improves grip and water evacuation capability. Grip performance and durability is also enhanced by the tire's rubber compounds, which use the latest generation of Michelin synthetic polymers.

Mid-Mount Controls

Let your boots fall where they may, naturally to the mid-mounted controls and rider foot pegs on the Street Bob® model. An easy reach and tight rider triangle is confidence-inspiring for new riders eager to set off on their journey and riders whose legs run slightly shorter than others.

2014 Jeep Cherokee Transmission Software Update

I've recently bought a 2015 Jeep Cherokee North 4x4 (Latitude 4x4 in the US I believe) and I've just started to read about all the transmission issues...

I bought mine used with 30000km (18500miles) and I've had it for 2 days (yes, I know, a little premature to be worrying) but the transmission is only a LITTLE sluggish between gears 1-4. I know those are the gears that most people are having issues with but their issues seem a lot more drastic than mine. The check engine light only came on once when I started up the Jeep this afternoon but after turning the vehicle off and back on again the problem was solved.

My real question is; how can I check if my transmissions software is up to date? I know Chrysler has been reviewing the software and developing updates but I have no idea if my tranny is up to date or not.

All the help is greatly appreciated!!

There is no way to tell on your own that I am aware of. But if you take it into your dealership they can tell you what updates are needed an a couple of minutes. I'm sure you probably need some since they are constantly updated. I just went in this week and I had 2 recalls and probably 4 updates, including a transmission flash. It helped my shifting problems and mine weren't that bad to begin with. Good Luck.

No way to tell or even guess. My 2015 4 cyl was built in January of 2015 and to date has had NO recalls or updates of any kind for the transmission or shifting and no problems whatsoever either. The only recall was to check on a possibly misrouted air conditioner line and mine did not have the problem, so was just a look and go.

Actually no way to be check except by the dealer.
All updates are for the most part VIN number specific to your particular Cherokee.
I would also check to see when your build date was. It was at some point around 3/2/15 that a hardware change was made to the transmission.

But basically if you are not having any issues at your mileage you should be fine.
I have a 2014 with 16,000 miles and I have been fine.
In my case my dealer told me that if I notice any change in the transmission to bring it in.

There's another possibility. That "little sluggish" feeling could be due to throttle response you're not accustomed to yet. Many have commented on it, including my wife. I demonstrated how quick it gets off the line if given the gas, and she's never complained since.

Probably due to the electronic throttle versus using hard linkage. Manufacturer can calibrate pedal travel to improve mpg during normal driving. Step into the pedal more than your other vehicles and see if that helps.
